“What are the dimensions for the ideal Pinterest image size?” This is the #1 question I get when it comes to Pinterest.

This question baffles me quite honestly, because the best practices that Pinterest put out, have never changed. Like, never.

Yet, it’s easy to find differentiating opinions on other blogs and in Facebook Groups. But, despite what you read elsewhere always go to the source–Pinterest. Trust me on this.

Ideal Pinterest Image Size - Guide & Examples

The Ideal Pinterest Image Size

The recommended size for your Pins is (and has always been) a vertical image with an aspect ratio of 2:3. If you’re not a graphic designer or good with ratios, that’s okay. “Aspect ratio” really just means the image’s width in comparison to its height. Here’s a handy example guide Pinterest created to make it easier (Pin or bookmark this post for future reference!).

Aspect Ratio for Pinterest - Chart

When designing Pinterest images, keep in mind:

  • Each one of these image sizes listed above are in fact a 2:3 ratio. They will all look identical in size when on Pinterest.
  • Anything larger than a 2:3 aspect ratio (aka making very long or “giraffe” Pins) will likely be truncated and will not be visible as a whole.
  • These specs will not change, unless Pinterest themselves puts out an update. Thus, feel free to ignore other specs you read in your Facebook Groups.

For three years I worked as a contractor for Pinterest and designed Pins for brands of all types. And I ALWAYS design in the 2:3 aspect ratio. My default size is 1000px X 1500px, but again, any of those listed in the chart above work just the same.

You might ask, “Can’t I use other sizes? What about ____?”

And the answer is, sure. You can technically create Pins in any size you want. But why would you? Pinterest provides the exact size they prefer and will perform best on Pinterest. It’s a no-brainer to me. Use their desired specs.

Once you put the debate to rest of the ideal Pinterest image size, you can start putting energy into designing compelling Pinterest creatives that drive more traffic from Pinterest to your blog or website (just a few examples below). Size is a crucial element to get right, but there are many other aspects that go into designing a great Pin.
